Update Your White Grout Shower (The Easy Way)
We Had A Builder Grade Shower With White Grout
We upgraded our fixtures in the build process, but we were not able to choose the grout color. Want to know a pro tip? White grout does not stay white. After two years of dingy white grout, I wanted something fresh, but I also did not want to have to demo our whole shower.
So let me show you my shower transformation with a $9.00 grout pen and some elbow grease. I purchased 8 markers, and used 7.
Materials for Updating White Shower Grout:
- The Grout Pen by: Rainbow Chalk Markers Ltd on Amazon , I used 7 markers to complete our shower.
- Pack of Microfiber Cloths
How To Update White Shower Grout With A Grout Pen:
- Clean shower thoroughly and allow for area to completely dry
- Open Grout Pen and Prime Paint
- Start tracing your grout lines
- Allow to dry for minimum of 6 hours, I waited 12-24 hours.
- Take a damp microfiber towel and wipe off excess (this is time consuming but rewarding)
- Repeat steps throughout entire shower area
- Go back and touch up after original application has dried
- Clean shower area with windex
- Admire your hard work
The Details:
After you have cleaned your shower, be sure to allow time for all of the grout to be 100% dried. You do not want to apply grout stain if grout is wet. If your grout is sealed the grout pen company does not recommend using this product. Be sure to read all instructions on the back of package before use. There are two types of markers, a thicker tip and the regular one linked above. Most showers are grouted for the regular sized smaller tip.
Now for the fun part, those of you who are type A like I am, will enjoy drawing these lines. Open your package and grab a paper towel (or use the back of the package) to prime the marker. I pressed down on the tip 4-5 times for the pain to start flowing. I found the best way to hold your marker is at an angle to keep the paint flowing. PRO TIP: When you notice you have to prime your marker more as you are using it, grab another one. This is MUCH easier with a marker that is not running out of paint.
Next, start tracing those lines! I did our shower section by section. I would start on part of it in the morning so it had time to dry, then clean the excess off in the evening, then did some touch up. The whole shower took about 3 days. In this picture, you can see where the clean straight lines are, and where I went back over where the lines are thicker.

Let’s clean the excess, what I mean by this is taking your damp microfiber cloth, putting it around your pointer finger and GENTLY going along each line. You will see the grout will magically come off of the tile leaving you with beautiful straight lines. To note: depending how great of a job your sub did with the grout, you will see some imperfections depending on how straight they did your grout lines and if they were consistent with the thickness.
Keep On Going!
YES, your arm will be a little sore, but I promise this project is so worth it. Take breaks as needed. It really is as easy as drawing and cleaning.
In this photo you can see where I had cleaned the excess off but the whole shower needs a good wipe. Once you’re done cleaning your excess and your lines look great. Spray the whole shower with some windex and shine it up!

Can you believe this is the same shower? It really is only a couple steps and your shower looks brand new! I love this DIY because it is something ANYONE can do!
