Look, throw pillows are not cheap! And the pillows that are cheap don’t have that full and fluffy look I’m going for. Luckily, I’ve developed this hack for creating elevated, professional-looking pillows at a fraction of the price. Here’s how!

How I Get Affordable Throw Pillows For My Couch

Step 1: Find cheap pillows you like at Target or Walmart.

Head over to Target, Walmart, or even TJ Maxx and look for throw pillows in designs you like. They don’t have to be fluffy or well-filled, just make sure they have a zipper so you can remove the cover.

Step 2: Buy a down feather insert that’s 2-4 inches bigger than your cover.

Next, measure your pillow cover and buy a down feather insert that’s 2-4 inches bigger than the cover. Down is the key to that super fluffy look we’re going for. Plus, with an insert that’s larger than the cover, you won’t get those unsightly wrinkles and gaps you see on cheaper pillows.

Step 3: Stuff, fluff, and CHOP!

Now, stuff the down insert into the cover. Fluff it up, set it on your couch, and give it a karate chop down the middle! This creates that super pleasing shape you see in ads and home decor magazines.

Step 4: Enjoy your new throw pillows!

There you have it! Now, enjoy your brand new throw pillows! This hack is my favorite for creating more texture on my couch, and since it saves me so much money, I can justify swapping out the covers for different seasons.

My Favorite Throw Pillows For the Couch

There are tons of options for cute, farmhouse-style pillows at Target, Walmart, and TJ Maxx. Don’t be afraid to check the bedding section and the outdoor living section. Just because it’s meant for outdoor use doesn’t mean it can’t look great in your home!

Tips for Choosing Farmhouse-Style Throw Pillow Covers

Now that you know how to find affordable throw pillows, you’ve got tons of options! Here are my tips for creating a beautiful, cohesive look in your living space.

Tip 1: Mix and match textures.

Textured throw pillows can add visual interest to an otherwise-boring couch. Look for natural textures like linen, tapestry-style woven fabrics, and knit cables. A blend of textures can draw the eye to your couch and make the space look more inviting.

Tip 2: Experiment with different shapes and sizes.

Square throw pillows are my go-to, but I also love mixing up the shapes and sizes. Use a long, thin bolster down the center of your couch, or pile the corners with different sized squares. You can even find circular inserts if that’s your style!

Tip 3: A pop of color goes a long way.

I love the neutral look, but a single colorful throw pillow can add a lot of dimension to your living space! Place a solid-colored throw pillow behind a neutral, textured one to create an eye catching backdrop.

This hack has saved me literally hundreds of dollars on decor, and I’m so excited to see what you do with it in your own home! Be sure to tag us @ourfauxfarmhouse on Instagram to show off your upgraded living space!
