In today’s world, it can be easy to get sucked into the comparison game. Especially when it comes to rom design, it can be hard to parse out what you love vs. what is trending online. After years of renovating our home, I want to share my tips I’ve learned with you to help you design a space of your own quickly and efficiently.

Before we dive in, hi! My name is Emily from @weareforeverhome on Instagram. I am a stay at home mom to my 6 year old son and four year old twin daughters. My husband, Lee, works as a firefighter and has been renovating our home. He is the real MVP!  We have been fixing up our farmhouse for the last few years in beautiful California.

Tip #1: Pick Pieces That Are Undeniably YOU!

The most important part of any room design project is to pick what you love and tune our the rest. It’s an obvious tip, but often overlooked!

In my home, one of my favorite projects is my kids bathroom. My goal was to pick timeless features that would be in style for years to come. When we initially explored the idea of a bathroom remodel, I fell in love with the idea of having one sink for each child. Quite a few people weren’t fans of having three sinks, but what can I say! I have three small children and having three individual sinks in their bathroom has benefited us tremendously.

It wasn’t the traditional design choice, but this setup is a game-changer for our family.

Tip #2: Create A Mood Board

Second, mood board, mood board, mood board. Take all the pictures, find all the images copy and paste those together. It really helps give you a feel of the vibe you are striving for. Proper planning is the key to a cohesive room design.

One great way to create a room design online es with the program Canva. It is a free tool that also has an amazing, easy to use app. You can create mood board in just a few minutes to bring your design to life.

Tip #3: Mix Old & New

Third, mix old and new! Don’t be afraid to mix a little target with a little antique store.

When it comes to thrifting, you can find me frequently checking our local Craigslist and resale sites. I have found some amazing gems at a price that didn’t break our budget. The key is to check often as the “good” stuff tends to go quickly. I’ve also had some luck by getting in touch with our local habit for humanity for discounted building supplies.

It is really special to design your home with pre-loved items for many reasons, but I love that our money goes back into our community! It’s the cherry on top to finding the perfect, unique piece.

Tip #4: It’s Okay To Change Your Mind

It’s not only okay, it’s normal to have to make some returns and design changes! There have been occasians where getting tile, fixtures, or any finishes into a space can completely change your room design. Seeing first hand if items work in your space are very important in making the whole room flow.

Don’t let this discourage you – keep going, friend!

I hope those tips helped you complete a space you’ve been wanting to tackle or have been hesitant to design. You can do it! You don’t need to pay anyone to design, just follow your heart 🙂
